Vanhojentanssimekon korjaus - ball gown fixing

Mieheni tytär ja vanhojentanssit, internetin ihmeellisestä maailmasta tilattu mekko valtavalla helmalla joka aivan liian pitkä. Lyhennysoperaatio siis. Melkoinen homma, helma kaksinkertainen ja metreissä valtavan pitkä, hommia riitti paljon enempi mitä ajatteli kun lupasi ryhtyä hommaan. Kuvassa ei tietysti työn tulos näy, mutta mekon näkeminen antaa osviittaa.

My boyfriends daughter and her ball, a dress from the wonderful world of the internet with a hem which was huge and way too long. Shortening needed. What a job, way harder than one would think at first. But I got it done. Naturally on the picture the job  cannot be seen, but the dress will give you an idea.

Boat tarp - veneen pressu

The old one started to crack in the seems so one day we sat down, measured and voila, it was ready. Pretty good if I migth say. It fits way better than the picture will show.

Vanha rupesi ratkeamaan saumoista joten eräänä päivänä istuimme alas, mittaismme ja avot, kohta se oli valmis. Melko hyvä, ettenkö sanoisi. Sopii vielä paremmin mitä kuvasta voisi päätellä.

Dog bed - koiralle vuode

Today I really surprised myself by making this dog bed for our new arrival, the baby dog :) I did by the fabric earlier so it did not come totally out of the blue, but I didn't think I'd get it done so soon. Today my patience was really tested because nothing worked or fit together, but I don't think the dog minds a few flaws :)

Tänään todella yllätin itseni tekemällä tämän koiranpedin uusimmalle tulokkaalle, koiravauvalle :) Ostin kyllä kankaan aiemmin joten ei tämä ihan puun takaa tullut, mutta en uskonut kyllä saavani tätä aikaiseksi näin pian. Tänään ommellessa kärsivällisyyteni todellakin testattiin sillä mikään ei toiminut eikä sopinut yhteen, mutta en usko että koiraa haittaa muutama kauneusvirhe :)

Pillow cases - tyynynpäälliset

Last but not least I made six pillow cases out of the same fabric as the curtains. I put zippers in all of them to enable washing.  Zippers are never too easy, but other than that it's fairly straight forward and I think I did well with the zippers too :)

Viimeisenä, vaan ei vähäisimpänä ompelin kuusi tyynynpäällistä samasta kankaasta kuin verhot. Laitoin kaikkiin vetoketjut pesemisen mahdollistamiseksi. Vetoketjut eivät koskaan ole kovin helppoja, mutta muuten aika yksinkertaista ja onnistuin tällä kertaa aika hyvin vetoketjujenkin kanssa :) 

Table cloth - pöytäliina

Although I am aware that sewing a table cloth with four straight seems is not exactly rocket science, I still wanted to post it here :) All the same it's something I've done, altough not difficult.

Vaikka olen tietoinen siitä ettei pöytäliinan ompeleminen neljällä suoralla saumalla ole aivan avaruustiedettä, halusin silti julkaista tämän täällä. Niin tai näin olen tehnyt sen itse, vaikkei vaikeaa ollutkaan.

New Curtains - uudet verhot

 

Finally I got something done on the sewing front  and finished these curtains :)  The white ones are old and from the store, a total of six curtains of which four were made now :)

Vihdoinkin sain jotain aikaiseksi ompelurintamalla ja sain valmiiksi nämä verhot. Valkoiset ovat vanhat ja kaupasta ostetut, yhteensä kuusi verhoa joista neljä on tehty nyt :)

Reflectors for horse - heijastimet hevosille.

There are two dear Finnish horses that I do ride, one more often than the other, but still. Due to my job (that badly affects my hobbies :)) I have to ride in the dark half of the year. Not to be run over I decided to sew another pair of reflectors for the horses that goes just above the hoof. I will try to take pictures later :)

Ratsastelen kahta suomenhevosta, toista useammin kuin toista, mutta kuitenkin. Johtuen työstäni (joka pahasti haittaa harrastuksiani) joudun ratsastamaan pimeässä puolet vuodesta. Jotta en tulisi yliajetuksi päätin tehdä toiset setit heijastimia heppojen jalkoihin, siihen vuohisen yläpuolelle. Koitan ottaa kuvia myöhemmin.

If knitting won't do it, sewing will :) - aka dog mantle

The knitted dog mantle was nothing short of a disaster, but I am persistant and my dog needed a new mantle (the old one covers just the back, not the (nearly) hairless belly). I had no pattern, so this is made from scratch. It is a wee bit too long (from neck to tail) but the dog will still grow so I am pretty darn pleased and will make more :)

Neulottu koiran takki oli jotakuinkin totaalinen floppi, mutta minä olen sitkeä, ja koirani tarvitsi uuden takin (vanha peittää vain selän eikä (melkein) karvatonta mahaa). Kaavoja ei ollut, joten tämä on tehty alusta asti itse. Se on hiukan liian pitkä (niskasta häntään), mutta koira kasvaa vielä joten olen hitsin tyytyväinen ja teen näitä lisää :)

Knitting basket cover - käsityökorin huppu

Having two kitties now I needed something A.S.A.P to cover my precious knitting since cats loves yarn. I made this up in about half an hour and it's served it's purpose well :)

Nyt kun meillä on kaksi kissaa tarvitsin jotain todella äkkiä suojaamaan rakkaita neulomuksiani sillä kissat rakastavat lankaa. Tämän viritin puolessa tunnissa, ja hyvin on ajanut asiansa :)

bridesmaids' dresses - morsiusneitojen mekot

In two mere days I made FOUR of tese, two for my girls that can be seen in the front and two for my lovely goddaughters of which one can be seen at the back. They turned out very nice :)

Kahdessa vaivaisessa päivässä ompelin näitä mekkoja NELJÄ, kaksi omille tytöilleni jotka näkyvät tässä etualalla, ja kaksi ihanille kummitytöilleni joista toinen näkyy taustalla. Niistä tuli oikein kivat :)

cell holder - kännyteline

I have been in agony for a long time already when our mobiles pile up on this drawer in the hall. It's handy to have them there because it's very central in our house and easy to reach, you pass it when you come and go. But, it's also the only place where you can actually lay something off your hands and if it's invaded by mobiles there's always the risk that one of them end up on the floor. We have 5 mobiles now (older daughter has her own, Aki has two because one is for work and one is his private and then there's my two - the communicator I use every day, and my old little shellphone that I use for sports etc. ) and the little one (soon 7) needs her own when she starts school this fall. So there's quite a few of them. Aki suggested that I'd make something myself since I am so handy and I went straight downstairs and made one :) Clever, eh?

Olen jo pitkään tuskaillut sitä että kännykkämme kerääntyvät eteisen lipastolle. Siinä niitä on kätevä pitää sillä se on kodissamme keskeinen paikka ja siitä tulee mentyä ohi vähän väliä, mutta se on myös ainoa paikka mihin voit laskea jotain käsistäsi, ja jos se on kännyköiden valtaama on aina suuri riski että jokin niistä päätyy lattilalle. Meillä on nyt 5 kännykkää (seitsenvuotiaalla omansa, AKilla sekä työ että privaattikännykkä ja mulla kommunikaattori sekä pieni lenkkipuhelin...) ja kohta on edessä kuudennen osto kun kuopus syksyllä aloittaa koulun. Joten niitä on muutama. Aki sitten ehdotti että mikset tee sellaista telinettä itse kun kerta olet kätevä, ja minähän marssin suoraan alakertaan ja tein tällaisen. Kätevä, eikö?

I went to take the pictures today because I forgot the camera yesterday. It's hard to take decent pictures of a room - I am standing in the doorway, had I gone any further I would have had some of the door in the picture too. This will have to do. Since the practice computers are here on my left hand side on the picture I could not get them in the same picture.

Kävin tänään ottamassa kuvat kun eilen unohdin kameran. On vaikea ottaa kunnon kuva pitkulaisesta huoneesta. Kuvaa ottaessa seison ovensuussa, jos olisin siitä peruuttanut kuvaan olisi tullut osa ovenkarmejakin. Tämän on kelvattava. Koska harjoittelukoneet ovat kuvassa vasemman käden puolella takakulmassa en saanut niitä samaan kuvaan.

I have been sewing again - olen ommellut taas

Yesterday was an Activity-day for me (with a capital A:)). After I took my daughter to the dentist I started putting together a little cabinet I had bought for the loo downstairs. Ever since we moved here we have been looking for the perfect little storage thing to put in the corner but have not found anything suitable because the space is so little that the requirements are too high. But yesterday shopping for the little things you hang curtains with (on a rail instead of a rod) I just accidentally stumbled across one. Not surprising I bought it straight away. But, of course it had to be assembled... *sigh*... and I wanted to do it by myself because I wanted it to be there when the rest got home. I did it, and it was not too difficult (I am used to assembling stuff because we have a house full of stuff from Ikea :)) either.

When I got that done I started on the next task - curtains for Aki's classroom (he has his own driving school). Earlier we went shopping for fabric together and although I was a doubting his choice a bit (black and white checkered like the finish flags at car races) I sort of thought there was a point behind it (the car theme) so I did not air my feeling that the pattern was a bit restless. Good thing I didn't because it turned out great. I added three stripes down at the bottom to match the logo of his school and I also made two hoods for the practice computer screens. It took me longer than expected to make the curtain although it was just a straight seem because the curtain was about 10m long and the stripes had to be attached at both sides which meant 60 m of seam. I got it read just in time to rush to the school, lure myself in (key at the local photoshop they have a deal because students has to get in to practice even at times when Aki's out driving and there's no other staff) and hang the curtain. When Aki and the students got in for the theory class all was ready and I was wiping sweat off my forehead.

Eilen mulla oli Aktiviteettipäivä (isolla A:lla:)). Kun olin käyttänyt tyttäreni oikojalla aloin koota pientä kaappia jonka ostin alakerran wc:tä varten. Siitä asti kun tähän muutimme olemme etsineet täydellistä säilytystilaa kulmaan mutta emme ole löytäneet mitään koska tila on niin pieni että se nostaa vaatimukset liian korkealle. Eilen kun olin ostamassa verhonipsuja törmäsin vahingossa täydelliseen kaappiin. Sanomattakin on selvää että ostin sen siltä seisomalta. Mutta, se oli tietenkin koottava...*huokaus*...ja halusin tehdä sen itse koska halusin sen olevan valmiina kun perhe kotiutuu. Tein sen, eikä se edes ollut kovin haatava (olen tottunut kokoamiseen kun meillä on talo täynnä Ikeasta ostettua tavaraa :)).

Kun sain sen tehtyä aloitin seuraavaa taakkaa - verhot Akin luokkahuoneeseen (hänellä on oma autokoulu). Aikaisemmin kävimme ostamassa kankaan yhdessä ja epäilin hieman hänen kangasvalintaansa (mustavalkoruudullinen kuten maalilippu autokisoissa) mutta koska toisaalta ajattelin että sen takana on idea kun se sopii teemaan niin en sanonut mitään siitä että mielestäni se oli vähän levoton. Hyvä niin, sillä siitä tuli hyvä eikä se ikkunaan ripustettuna näyttänyt yhtään levottomalta. Lisäsin kolme raitaa alareunaan pysyäkseni autokoulun logon teemassa ja tekaisin samalla harjoitustietokoneiden näytöille huput.

Verhojen tekeminen kesti odotettua pidempään sillä vaikka kyse oli suorista saumoista verho on noin 10m pitkä ja kanttinauhat oli kiinnitettävä molemmista reunoistaan joka tarkoitti 60m ommelta. Sain sen valmiiksi juuri viime tipassa että ehdin rientää autokoululle, hommata itseni sisään (paikallisessa valokuvausliikkeessä avain sillä oppilaiden on päästävä sisään harjoittelemaan silloinkin kun Aki on ajossa - muuta henkilökuntaa kun ei ole) ja ripustaa verho. Kun Aki ja oppilaat tulivat teoriatuntia varten olin juuri saanut verhon ripustettua ja pyyhin hikeä otsalta.

Furry things - karvapörröt

Believe it or not, these things are sewn :) They are absolutely hilarious. I love them. The only thing is that they turned out too big and can only be used at really cold weathers with another pair of mittens underneath.

Uskokaa tai älkää, nämä ovat ommellut. Ne on kertakaikkiaan hervottomat. Tykkään niistä. Harmi että ovat sen verran liian isot että niitä voi käyttää vain todella kylmillä säillä laittamalla toiset tumput alle.

Marimekko bags - Marimekkolaukkuja

One spring a few years ago I planned together with a colleague to make a summer bag out of this very popular brand fabric, Marimekko Unikko. She bought the material, I did the job. I think our bags where light green (there's an enormous variety of colors and the flowers come in many sizes too). Suddenly another colleague wanted one too, and then another and another. Soon I had made 40+ bags. *phew*. They all turned out very nice and I have 6-7 different ones for myself too. These particular ones are for my friend and her daughter for their trip to some southern resort. The smaller triangle shaped thingies at the back are small scarves to protect the head.

Eräänä keväänä muutama vuosi sitten päätimme kolleegani kanssa tehdä itsellemme kesäkassit Marimekon suositusta Unikko-kankaasta. Kolleegani osti kankaan, minä tein työn. Muistaakseni nämä ensimmäiset kassit olivan vaaleanvihreäsävyisiä. Pian seuraava kolleega kysyi tekisinkö ihanan kassin hänellekin, ja sitten seuraava, ja seuraava, kunnes olin tehnyt niitä yli neljä kymmentä. Niistä tulikin tosi hienoja ja itsellänikin on ainakin 6-7 erilaista. Nämä kyseessä olevat kappaleet ovat ystävälleni ja hänen tyttärelleen etelänlomaa varten. Takana olevat kolmionmalliset kappaleet ovat pienä huiveja pään suokaksi.

I can sew - Osaan ommella

I can in fact sew as well even though I seldom do because normally the only time I have for myself (handicraft) is after the girls are in bed and then I cannot be bothered to go downstairs and sit sewing by myself.

This curtain has been made for my parents upon my mother's request. My mother bought the fabric so I don't know anything about it - it must have been quality fabric though because it was wonderful to sew. The flaw you can see in the upper right hand corner is not a flaw of the curtain (of course not) but the velcro tape has come off.

Osaan siis ommellakin vaikka harvoin niin teen, pääasiassa siksi että se oma aika (aika käsitöille) mitä minulla on, on tyttöjen mentyä nukkumaan illalla, ja silloin en enää jaksa vaivautumaan alakertaan ompelemaan yksikseni.

Tämä verho on ommeltu vanhemmilleni äitini pyynnöstä. Äitini osti kankaan joten en tiedä siitä mitään, mutta päättelin että se oli laadukasta kangasta sillä sitä oli aivan ihana ommella. Epäkohta joka näkyy oikeass yläkulmassa ei (tietenkään) ole verhossa, vaan tarranauha vain on irronnut vastapuolestaan.

Orange zip-suit - oranssit haalarit

I have been wondering about this zip-suit now that I have been sewing more - this suit was made in the very yearly days of sewing and was no piece of cake. Still it turned out great and has been used a whole lot. The fabric was very durable and even two kids later you can hardly see any marks on it. Even the white patches cleans up nice in the washing machine. This piece I am very proud of :)

Olen nyt myöhemmin, nyt kun osaan ommella paremmin, ihmetellyt miten olen saanut tämän aikaiseksi. Se ei ollut mikään pala kakkua ja se on tehty ompelu-urani alkuaikoina. Silti siitä tuli hieno ja sitä on käytetty todella paljon. Kangaskin oli tosi kestävää, kaksi lasta myöhemmin pystyy hädin tuskin näkemään että sitä on käytetty. Jopa vaikoiset paikat puhdistuvat hienosti pesussa. Tästä vaatteesta olen todella ylpeä.
