Knee socks, foot 39, shin circumference 39cm

Use your preferred method of casting on for starting a toe up sock. Cast on for a total of 52 stitches (ie if you use the short row toe method cast on 26 stitches) I used a provisional cast on and did a short row toe leaving 8 stitches in the middle. If you don't know how to do a short row toe with a provisional cast on, see how Wendy Johnson did it.

Keep knitting in the round until foot measures 19cm from the tip of the toe. Make one stitch before the first stitch on TOP of the foot and one stitch after the last stitch. Repeat at 20cm.

When foot measures 21,5cm do a short row heel. Again see above instructions by Wendy if you are not familiar with this heel. After the heel I often pick up one in between the heel and the foot to make sure no hole is formed. Later I knit two together to loose that stitch, but this time I left it where it was. Now continue knitting for about 7cm (from where the heel ends). You should now be about where the shin start widening again.

From now on the beginning and end of round is at the back of the shin. Now make 1 (alternating between right and left needle) one, work that row to the end and three more even. Repeat 4 more times (a total of 5 stitches made ending with three even rows). Work should now measure about 15,5cm from end of heel (where the short rows end). If your gauge is different adjust accordingly.

Next make 1 in the beginning of the row as wells as in the end (=m2). I prefer to make one stitch on the previous row to get them in the same line but that does not matter in the end). Work two rows even. Repeat this (make 2, work three rows even) 10 more times.

Now make 2, work three rows even. Repeat 6 more times. Then make 2, work four rows even and repeat this for a total of 8 times. Now stop increasing and work even for 24 rows.

K1,P1 for 6,5cm and bind off loosely. With this rib I used a tubular bind off. If you are not familiar with this see how Savannahchick did it :)

Knee socks - Polvisukat

For a while already I've had a problem with disliking most self-striping yarn that I have bought. It was a happy moment for me when I saw this yarn in my stash and I liked it so much that I decided to knit myself a pair of knee socks:) I dislike wearing stockings or leggings even during the winter so knee socks has turned out to be my thing - they will keep my legs warm under my jeans :) I had no pattern her so I just wrote down what I did and counted as I went along. They turned out great. Time will show if I'll need to by some elastic silicone rubber band to get the socks to stay up as they get a little looser.

Jonkin aikaa jo minulla on ollut ongelmana se, etten ole pitänyt suurimmasta osasta itseraidoittuvia lankoja jotka minulla varastossa on. Oli onnellinen hetki kun näin tämän langan varastosssani ja totesin pitäväni siitä niin paljon että päätin neuloa itselleni polvisukat. En pidä talvellakaan pitkisten enkä sukkahousujen pitämisestä joten polvisukat on osoittautuntut minun jutuksi - ne pitää sääreni lämpimänä farkkujen alla. Näistä tuli ihanat. Aika näyttää tarviiko käydä ostamassa silikonikuminauhaa sitten kun sukat käytössä hieman löystyvät vai pysyvätkö ylhäällä ilman.

2 pairs of socks - kaksi sukkaparia

My own family is drowning in socks and gloves and so I made a pair of socks each for my lovely goddaughters ( now aged 4 1/2). They came along fast, just very basic socks. This was a reduce-my-huge-stash effort and although it did not reduce my stash much, just a little, it was worth it :)

Oma perheeni hukkuu sukkiin ja lapasiin joten tein sukkaparin kullekin kummitytölleni (nyt 4 1/2 vee). Ne valmistui nopeasti, ihan perussukat. Tämä oli epätoivoinen yritys pienentää megalomaanista varastoani, ja vaikka se ei pienentynyt paljon, se oli sen arvoista :)

Gail

I've had this yarn for ages, and it's very very pretty in the ball, but as soon as I started knitting it started pooling awfully. I've tried several different approaches but never liked one. This was the millionth or so pattern I tried and finally, FINALLY it's not too bad. Unfortunately I run out of yarn since I only had a 100g ball and started with a couple of sizes too small needle. But who cares, I am happy with my teeny weeny scarf and it will look rather good with my lilac winter jacket next year :)

Tämä lanka on ollut minulla aikoja, ja se on todella nättiä kerällä, mutta heti kun aloitin neulomisen se aloitti klikkaantumisen (heh, olen hyvä keksimään uusia sanoja...) rumalla tavalla. Kokeilin useaa eri lähestymistapaa mutta yhdestäkään en pitänyt. Tämä oli noin miljoonannes ohje jota kokeilin ja vihdoinkin, VIHDOINKIN ei ole hassumpi lopputulos. Valitettavasti lanka loppui kesken koska minulla oli vain 100g kerä lankaa ja aloitin hieman liian pienillä puikoilla. Mutta hei, ketä kiinnostaa, olen innoissani pikkururisesta huivistani ja se tulee näyttämään oikein mukavalta ensi talvena vaaleanlilan talvitakkini kanssa :)

Lion's lace shawl - Lion's lace huivi

My friend asked me for a lace shawl for winter (ie warm as well) knit from thicker wool than lace wool. She brought me the yarn which obviously was what I had to work with. The yarn was very very nice to knit and the shawl knit up fast and was easily memorized ie perfect for tv-knitting :) The size ended up way smaller than requested (she asked for approx 240 x 90cm) but I ran out of yarn. I asked her whether she'd wait for me buying more yarn but she preferred to get the shawl the size it was then.

Ystäväni pyysi minulta pitsihuivia talveksi (ts lämmin) paksummasta langasta kuin pitsihuivilangasta. Hän toi minulle langat joten siitä oli lähdettävä. Lankaa oli mukava neuloa ja huivi syntyi nopeasti jonka lisäksi mallineule jäi helposti mieleen eli oli täydellinen tv-työ :) Koko tuli paljon pienemmäksi kuin mitä oli toiveena (hän toivoi noin 240 x 90cm kokoista huivia) mutta lanka loppui. Kysyin haulaako hän odotta että ehdin ostamaan uutta lankaa, mutta hän ottaa mieluummin huivin sen kokoisena kun se on.

Likewise a desperate stash eating effort. I dislike the yarn. Still. Deeply. The sock pattern was A LOT OF FUN and very well made, easy to follow and the result was very fitting.

Yhtälailla epätoivoinen yritys syödä osa varastoista. En pidä langasta. Vieläkään. Yhtään. Sukkaohje oli HAUSKA ja hyvin tehty, helppo seurata ja tulos oli istuva.

An American in China - socks - sukat

A little, desperate move to reduce the stash. At least a little, it's not like this 67g makes a huge hole in my stash :) I cannot for my life figure why I have bought so much self-striping sock yarn, this particular colourway is okay, but the turquoise I last used is hideous. Anyway, this blue yarn is now finished, as in NONE left :)

The pattern I used was not brilliant, either I'm stupid or the pattern was full of little strange parts so I had to make a lot of mods. I will tell you about them here because there's too many to list under mods :) To start with my yarn was not exactly making gauge so I had 4 extra stitches. I also widened the linen stitch to 3 stitches more on each side because the change of pattern at the same point as the needle change was was just not good. Therefore, of course, I had to make mods around the heel to catch up with the pattern. The heel was supposed to be worked with 17st in linen stich, I used 19 because of the four extra stitches I had. In retrospect the heel is really not nice, did I make a new pair now that I'm wiser I would definitely make the heel flap at least 4-6 stitches wider, as it is it isn't very nice on the heel. Also coming up to the ribbing I had to make 4 short rows at the back because the leg of the sock was lookin all weird and it was way too low at the back. I still don't like these socks very much, but considering how many mods I had to make I am quite happy with the outcome. At least they look like socks, they did not at all points :/


Pieni, epätoivoinen yritys pienentää varastoja. Vähän, eihän tämä 67g tee kovin suurta reikää varastooni. En mitenkään ymmärrä miksi olen ostanut näin paljon itseraidoittuvaa sukkalankaa. Tämä sininen väri on ihan jees, mutta viimeksi käyttämäni turkoosi on aivan kamala. Jokatapauksessa tämä sininen lanka on nyt loppu, siis L-O-P-P-U :)

Käyttämäni ohje ei ollut kovin loistava. Joko olen tyhmä, tai ohjeessa oli paljon pieniä kummallisuuksia joten jouduin tekemään aika paljon muutoksia. Kerron niistä tässä koska niitä on liian monta jotta mahtuisi muutosten alle. Ensinäkin langalla en päässyt oikeaan neuletiheyteen joten minulla on 4 ylimääräistä silmukkaa. Levensin myös pellavaneulosta 3 silmukalla molempiin suuntiin koska ei vaan ollut hyvä että pellavaneulos päättyi samaan paikkaan missä puikot vaihtui. Sen takia jouduin tietenkin kantapäätä lähestyessä tekemään muutoksia jotta pääsin ajan tasalle ohjeessa kantapäätä varten. Kantapäässä piti neuloa 17s:lla pellavaneuletta mutta käytin 19 koska minulla oli ne 4 ylim. silmukkaa. Jälkikäteen ajateltuna kantapää ei ole kovin hyvä, jos tekisin uuden sukkaparin nyt käyttäisin ehdottomasti kantapäässä vähintään 4-6 s enemmän koska nyt se ei ole kovin istuva. Ribbineuloksen alussa oli tehtävä 4 lyhennettyä kierrosta koska sukka näytti ihan kierolta ja oli aivan liian matala takaa.
En vieläkään pidä näistä sukista, mutta ottaen huomioon kuinka paljon muutoksia jouduin tekemään olen sangen tyytyväinen. Ainakin ne nyt näyttävät sukilta, joka vaiheessa näin ei ollut.
