wooly pants - villahousut

In our climate (up until this very year - I would say this has been a very English winter) woolen pants are needed more often than not. In normal winter temperatures that vary between -5 degrees centigrade and -30 degrees centigrade that is... I made this upon request for the same lady that I made the soft light blue baby overall for and although the pair don't look dazzling the practicality of this item is super if I may say so. I stumbled across this pattern Googling and I am so happy I did. This is a size 3-4 but made for a 18-month-old toddler. Look at the ribbing down at the bottom and by the waist, it may be unfolded when the child grows. Also the slim legs are deceiving; because of the ribbing at the side it will stretch very well to suit an older child. There's some ribbing over the bum too that does not show on the picture. These are one of my favorites indeed.

Meidän sääolosuhteissa (tähän vuoteen asti, sanoisin tämän talven olleen hyvin Englantilaistyyppinen) villahousuja on tarvittu usein. Normaalien talviolosuhteiden vallitessa lämpötilat vaihtelevat -5 asteesta -30 asteeseen.

It seem that the ones who are happy with my work keep asking me to make stuff for them. This is for the same colleague who already has ordered four tops. Now she wanted something for herself. This was supereasy and superfast to make, and it's actually not knitted but crocheted. I want one for myself too whenever I have a chance to actually make something for ME.

blue Cousteau - sininen Cousteau

My father had hinted that he liked the black Cousteau I made for Aki. He had also hinted that he likes navy and brown. Can you not understand a hint like that? So I made two Cousteau's for my father for Christmas, the second of which I finished after dinner on Christmas Eve while we were talking.. I am glad I did not leave it until the last minute :)

Christmas order - joululahjatilaus

A colleague of mine ordered two pairs of mittens and socks for Christmas for his grandchild who is 2. As you can guess based on the colors it's a girl. All knitted of yarn I already had at home. There's a slight difference on the mittens because I ran out of yarn and had to modify the other one a bit. Can you spot the difference?

Kaikki neulottu kotona olevista langoista. Tumpuissa on pieni ero koska lanka loppui kesken ja jouduin hieman soveltamaan. Huomaatko eron?

wedding present - häälahja

I made this pair of socks - a very traditional Finnish Jussi-pattern - for a friend who is a true patriot. His wife got a pair of purple shaded socks that I forgot to take a picture of. If ever she gets around to taking the picture I so nicely asked for I will post it, of course. (and they also got some money for their honeymoon, this was just a little extra something :)).

These socks were THE challenge. *sigh*. They caused me so much trouble. There was no way I could get the squares nice on dpn's for a reason I don't know so I ended up knitting that bit flat - which of course resulted in a 5cm split at the ankle. In the end I managed to close that hole so that it does not stand out, perhaps even so that nobody will notice, but it bothers me so because _I_ know, don't I?

On top of that I had to keep frogging and knitting because the pattern was no good. I had to add some ribbing at the ankle which wasn't originally there because the socks were totally weird without it and make other modifications too - like I never had a pattern in the first place. In the picture they look nice though and the receiver seemed happy so all is well.

Nämä sukat olivat Haaste isolla H:lla. *huokaus*.

Joker started - Jokeri aloitettu

I have previously always been wondering while reading other blogs how some people can have even five or six projects at the same time and seem to keep track and enjoy it. I always only had one (here we don't take into count those dumped to the bottom of the basket because there's a mistake or lack of inspiration) until I started making little things for people I work with. Suddenly I realized how fun it is and also how handy it comes in sometimes to be able to say to people 'oh yes, I have indeed started it already' :)

I don't knit with a schedule and I rather do not promise to make something ready for a certain date. I am after all a full-time-working mother of two with husband(to-be) and a house to take care of. Beside work I do not need any more musts in my life :) Now I have made an exception though and promised to make a vest the same as I made for my truly for my friends father for Christmas. I am glad Christmas is still a good two months away.

All the same I started this joker hat for my godchild yesterday, I just happened to have a yellow day :) Originally this hat was made out of double Alpaca yarn but that is hard to come by as well as expensive so when I figured this fine Finnish yarn is about the same I went for it.

second brown vest - toinen ruskea liivi

Now how come I am so productive now although I have been working a lot too. This vest seemed to come along in no time. It turned out fine, better than the first one although I had to modify the pattern quite a bit because of the measurements I was given. It was a bit boring to actually make the same vest in the same colors too, but my friend insisted on the colors. Don't you think I am taking the same picture twice, I have in fact made two of these (look at the checkered bit carefully if you don't believe me).

Eventually this will end up as a dragon scarf for my dear friend. The one who always manages to spot things she wants with the vaguest of instructions :) Like the cabled tote I posted earlier, and now this. Her believe in my abilities has no limits - like I need no instructions :)

Tästä on tuleva lohikäärmehuivi rakkaalle ystävälleni.

Yellow joker -keltainen jokeri

Finally something's ready again. It feels like it always takes so long to actually show something ready when you are working on so many projects, especially now that the second brown vest takes up so much time. The front of the vest is now 2/3 done, the back is still undone but seeing that it's simple stockinette it's ready in no time.

At some point I found this pattern on Garnstudios site, it's a drops design. I have now finished this one for Katri, Elli's orange one is still on the needles because the vest is not a suitable job to take to work or in the car because it has 7 balls of yarn hanging from it. This is great, and as soon as my colleague saw it she asked me to make one each for both of her grandchildren. I promised. It was very nice to knit, I like knitting stuff that isn't monotonous and this wasn't, but still easy enough so that you don't have to focus all your attention on it.

Vihdoinkin jotain valmista taas.

Luckily these weren't even supposed to be pretty but practical. One more job for the same lady who wanted the Foxi things. Her daughter jogs a lot and gets cold ankles. These will keep them warm.

Pink top for Anni - pinkki bolero Annille

My friend (the one with the twin girls, she also has two older children) wanted me to knit something for her oldest child. Anni is 6, but tall for her age. This pattern was chosen because the top is simple and practical and something that you can let your child wear every day without having to worry what happens to it.

Frogging, again - purkamista, taas

I finlly got the backside of this VERY boring vest finished only to realize that it's too short. I did not wish to frog the top so I figured a better way - two straight needles, three rows and scissors. This is how it ended up. I knit about 10cm more and later put the pieces back together again. Clever. A critical eye can see a very slight difference where the join is, but nobody will pay attention to that unless they know.

I have no idea whatsoever what these things are called in English and I don't really have the time to surf the web just in case somebody somewhere made a pair and they actually have a name. If anybody knows, please tell me. However these were made for a very good friend of mine upon her request. NOT my kinda thing because my fingertips are always icecold :) Nice to make, but required quite a few changes to the pattern to turn out alright.

I've been shopping - Ostoksilla

I bought a lot of yarn this time. Three balls of light blue Mohair, two in pink and two balls of mercerised cotton. Both pink yarns are bought for a reason but the blue was bought for the beautiful color only :) You can also see that I have started the vest for my dearest. It was a painful process to find a pattern that his majesty would accept. Either the pattern was wrong or the neck was wrong or there was something else wrong with it. This was about the last pattern on earth that I thought he would choose. He never cease to amaze me :)

Striped top - raidallinen bolero

I made it ages ago already, big enough to fit this winter and I did well because it's just right now. Only there's no proper winter here this year, but that's a totally different ball game... it's wool, so the girls always needs a long sleeved shirt under it because it itches (although it's baby wool so to me it does not feel itchy but ... ).

My pride and joy - iloni ja ylpeyden aiheeni

My friend sent me an email with a link to a tote that somebody had made trying to get one of these bangle bags without having to spend all the money. She did quite well, and I didn't do any worse. Though a bit bigger, very much more practical and VERY much cheaper :) I found a pattern that somebody had made up but cannot find it anymore. It was used only as a guideline though, most of it I made up and figured out myself. I will happily later link to the pattern if it's found.

the same, but blue - sama sinisenä

Here is the other one for the older sister. She likes blue, not pink, so the colors are well chosen. I will try to get these pictures modelled by the owner too in due time.

pink lace top - vaaleanpunainen pitsibolero

My colleague begged me to knit a couple of these. She has two daughters close in age the same as I have and she, like myself, like to dress her girls the same but in different colors etc. She brought me the pattern, she bought me the yarn and I knit. It was a very pleasant yarn to knit. The pattern was weird because my friend (naturally, especially since she's not a knitter and even if she was - one would not doubt a pattern if it was within reason) bought the stated amount of yarn, and not even half of it was used up - and yes, since you asked, they turned out just the size they were supposed to too.

Branching out

Having tried lace on the triangular shawl I new that it was for me - I always like a little challenge, it goes for every aspect of life. Too easy is not for me, knitting as well as aerobic, crosswords as well as my job should be challenging. I also need the mindless knitting project for school and travel, but in general lace is my kinda thing. I am sure I would like intarsia too, the thing is though, I am not too keen on anything like that for myself.

curly wurly - kiharaista

Somehow I don't really seem to make stuff for myself or my family, but then again it makes me proud that people appreciate my efforts and wants something handknit for family and friends. I do not do this for the money, I don't even really get paid, at least not if you figure out what it makes per hour. Everybody pays a little extra (I buy the yarn and they pay me later) but as I said - not enough to quit my job :)

This scarf, not one of my best jobs, was made for my boss. The blame is not on me though, because it just turned out like this. I hope the owner likes it better than I do.

Foxi

This was the simples task ever. A scarf and a pair of mittens for which I cast on 9 stiches :) They were made in about 30 minutes. Not too bad. The mitten looks a bit silly on my adult hand (short) because it is made for a ten-year-old, but they stretch ;)

Ehkä helpoin tehtävä ikinä. Huivi ja lapaset jota varten loin 9 silmukkaa :) Noin puolessa tunnissa olivat valmiit, ei hassumpaa. Tumppu näyttää vähän hassulta minun aikuisessa kädessä (lähinnä lyhyt) koska on tehty kymmenvuotiaalle - mutta ne venyvät :)

Furry things - karvapörröt

Believe it or not, these things are sewn :) They are absolutely hilarious. I love them. The only thing is that they turned out too big and can only be used at really cold weathers with another pair of mittens underneath.

Turquoise shawl - turkoosi huivi

I never liked this shawl. I never even liked the yarn in the first place. Luckily I did not have to either because the yarn was given to me by a colleague whose favorite color this is. I knit her this shawl that she was happy with and also a Branching Out (pattern in English behind the link to Knitty :)) scarf that I don't have a picture of.

The pattern does not really show because the yarn was too thick for both patterns, but I could not find any better suited pattern either since she wanted something 'lacey' but not too much so. What a hard lady to please. After a lot of agony with the yarn the scarves were done *phew*.

Baby gift - vauvalahja

A colleague had heard that I happily knit stuff for nearly anybody and she wanted me to make one of these. It was hell to make because of the yarn (soft and nice, oh yeah, but a pain to knit and a nightmare to frog) but turned out beautiful and I have since seen it on the live model but was not granted permission to post the picture so you'll have to do with this.

Forking - Haarukointia

Have you ever made lace with a lace fork ?(I am not sure about the right translation here and I have not come over this old technique in any English blogs (as in the English language) so you just have to try to figure out what I mean. If any of you have a right word for this feel free to leave a comment, please.). It ended up as a beautiful wave pattern and it was not difficult to make (new to me until now), but it was very tedious in the end.

First you start with one loop and then you start crocheting up in the middle of the fork so that loops are formed on both sides around the fork . You make between 200-700 loops (this has 650 approx lengthwise) and then (and only then) you start crocheting around the edges to form the pattern. When you have come to one end of the loop string, you go around the corner and back again. Now you have 1/6th of the scarf done. Make 4 more similar pieces (crochet together as you go along) and finally a border all around. As I said not difficult but rather boring + realizing your scarf is WAY too long you cannot frog 'a little' from the end to make it shorter as you would with any other scarf , so you'd have to (I have to) frog the whole thing because the way it's made up. Shit happens, so to speak. This scarf is very nice, my colour exactly but being another yarn than recommended it turned out TOO long (the rug is about 200cm) to wear. I was new to this technique and could not foresee this while I was working on it. If anybody's interested I can try to translate it to English and make some sort of tutorial too. Please leave comments if you like it.

. Ole hyvä ja jätä kommentti.

Black Cousteau - Musta Cousteau

Though this picture, again, is stupid the hat is very nice and I have since made many more like this one and I am sure the last one from my needles has not yet seen the daylight either. The pattern was simple, it's versatile to many yarns and it sits very well on nearly any head. Do you need any more good reasons to make a Cousteau. Thank you Typy for the great pattern!

Kiitos Typy ihanasta ohjeesta!

Kiri

This is my first bigger lace project and it turned out very well. In this picture thought it is not yet blocked. I have no idea why spending 5 minutes on proper photography has been so hard for me before since I spend hours and hours on end making the projects up, but then won't spend a few extra minutes to get a nice picture of it. At least I have learned the meaning of good photography browsing through thousands of knit blogs :) I am still no guru at photoshooting, but I'm getting there. I have a good camera so I cannot blame anything on that. Eventually you will get a picture of this shawl blocked too - be patient
