Branching out

Having tried lace on the triangular shawl I new that it was for me - I always like a little challenge, it goes for every aspect of life. Too easy is not for me, knitting as well as aerobic, crosswords as well as my job should be challenging. I also need the mindless knitting project for school and travel, but in general lace is my kinda thing. I am sure I would like intarsia too, the thing is though, I am not too keen on anything like that for myself.

Kokeiltuani pitsineulontaa kolmiohuivissa tiesin että tämä on minun heiniäni. Pidän haasteista, ja sitä sovelletaan jokaiseen elämisen osa-alueeseen. Liian helppo ei ole minua varten, neulonnassa yhtä lailla kuin aerobicissa, ristikoissa kuten työssäkin pitää olla haastetta. Tarvitsen kyllä helpon neuletyön koulua ja matkustamista varten, mutta noin keskimäärin pitsi on minun juttujani. Varmasti pitäisin kuvioneuleistakin, mutta en pidä omakohtaisesti valmiista tuotteista kovin paljon.

curly wurly - kiharaista

Somehow I don't really seem to make stuff for myself or my family, but then again it makes me proud that people appreciate my efforts and wants something handknit for family and friends. I do not do this for the money, I don't even really get paid, at least not if you figure out what it makes per hour. Everybody pays a little extra (I buy the yarn and they pay me later) but as I said - not enough to quit my job :)

This scarf, not one of my best jobs, was made for my boss. The blame is not on me though, because it just turned out like this. I hope the owner likes it better than I do.

VÄlillä tuntuu etten tee itselleni tai perheelleni mitään, mutta samanaikaisesti tunnen ylpeyttä siitä, että ihmiset arvostavat vaivannäköäni niin paljon että haluavat käsinkudottua perheelleen ja ystävilleen. En tee tätä rahasta, oikeastaan en edes saa palkkaa - ainakaan jos laskee mitä saan tunnin työstä. Kaikki maksavat jonkun verran ylimääräistä (ostan langat jotka veloitan myöhemmin) mutta kuten sanottu, ei niin paljon että kannattaisi lopettaa päivätyö :)

Tämä huivi ei ole mikään parhaimmista töistäni, se on tehty pomolleni. Syy ei ollut minussa tosin, huivista tuli ihan ohjeen mukaan tällainen. Toivottavasti omistaja pitää siitä enemmän kuin minä.

Foxi

This was the simples task ever. A scarf and a pair of mittens for which I cast on 9 stiches :) They were made in about 30 minutes. Not too bad. The mitten looks a bit silly on my adult hand (short) because it is made for a ten-year-old, but they stretch ;)

Ehkä helpoin tehtävä ikinä. Huivi ja lapaset jota varten loin 9 silmukkaa :) Noin puolessa tunnissa olivat valmiit, ei hassumpaa. Tumppu näyttää vähän hassulta minun aikuisessa kädessä (lähinnä lyhyt) koska on tehty kymmenvuotiaalle - mutta ne venyvät :)

Furry things - karvapörröt

Believe it or not, these things are sewn :) They are absolutely hilarious. I love them. The only thing is that they turned out too big and can only be used at really cold weathers with another pair of mittens underneath.

Uskokaa tai älkää, nämä ovat ommellut. Ne on kertakaikkiaan hervottomat. Tykkään niistä. Harmi että ovat sen verran liian isot että niitä voi käyttää vain todella kylmillä säillä laittamalla toiset tumput alle.

Turquoise shawl - turkoosi huivi

I never liked this shawl. I never even liked the yarn in the first place. Luckily I did not have to either because the yarn was given to me by a colleague whose favorite color this is. I knit her this shawl that she was happy with and also a Branching Out (pattern in English behind the link to Knitty :)) scarf that I don't have a picture of.

The pattern does not really show because the yarn was too thick for both patterns, but I could not find any better suited pattern either since she wanted something 'lacey' but not too much so. What a hard lady to please. After a lot of agony with the yarn the scarves were done *phew*.

En missään vaiheessa pitänyt tästä huivista. En edes pitänyt langasta ensinkään. Onneksi ei tarvinnutkaan sillä työkaverini antoi tämän langan minulle - se oli hänen lempivärinsä. Tein hänelle tämän huivin ja hän piti siitä. Tein myös Branching Out (ohje linkin takana englanniksi) huivin josta ei ole kuvaa.

Kuvio ei oikein huivissä näy koska lanka on liian paksua molemmille ohjeille, mutta parempaakaan en löytänyt kun hän halusi pitsisen huivin jossa ei kuitenkaan saisi olla liikaa reikiä. Tätä rouvaa oli hankala miellyttää :) Tuskailtuani aikani langan kanssa huivit olivat onneksi valmiit *huh*.

Baby gift - vauvalahja

A colleague had heard that I happily knit stuff for nearly anybody and she wanted me to make one of these. It was hell to make because of the yarn (soft and nice, oh yeah, but a pain to knit and a nightmare to frog) but turned out beautiful and I have since seen it on the live model but was not granted permission to post the picture so you'll have to do with this.

Työkaverini oli kuullut että neulon melkein kelle vain ja hän pyysi että tekisin ystävättären tuoreelle pojalle tällaisen. Sen tekeminen oli kamalaa langan vuoksi (pehmeä ja miellyttävä, juu-u, mutta kamala neuloa ja purkaminen suorastaan painajaismaista). Siitä kuitenkin tuli todella nätti ja olen sittemmin nähnyt kuvan tästä vauvan päällä mutta en saanut lupaa postata sitä joten tämän on kelvattava.

Forking - Haarukointia

Have you ever made lace with a lace fork ?(I am not sure about the right translation here and I have not come over this old technique in any English blogs (as in the English language) so you just have to try to figure out what I mean. If any of you have a right word for this feel free to leave a comment, please.). It ended up as a beautiful wave pattern and it was not difficult to make (new to me until now), but it was very tedious in the end.

First you start with one loop and then you start crocheting up in the middle of the fork so that loops are formed on both sides around the fork . You make between 200-700 loops (this has 650 approx lengthwise) and then (and only then) you start crocheting around the edges to form the pattern. When you have come to one end of the loop string, you go around the corner and back again. Now you have 1/6th of the scarf done. Make 4 more similar pieces (crochet together as you go along) and finally a border all around. As I said not difficult but rather boring + realizing your scarf is WAY too long you cannot frog 'a little' from the end to make it shorter as you would with any other scarf , so you'd have to (I have to) frog the whole thing because the way it's made up. Shit happens, so to speak. This scarf is very nice, my colour exactly but being another yarn than recommended it turned out TOO long (the rug is about 200cm) to wear. I was new to this technique and could not foresee this while I was working on it. If anybody's interested I can try to translate it to English and make some sort of tutorial too. Please leave comments if you like it.

Oletko ikinä tehnyt pitsiä haarukalla? Siihen tulee kaunis aaltomainen kuvio eikä sitä ollut vaikea tehdä (tähän asti uusi tekniikka minulle), mutta loppua kohti kävi kyllä kyllästyttämään.

Yhdellä silmukalla aloitettiin ja virkattiin harukan keskustassa samalla muodostaen silmukoita haarukan ympäri molemmin puolin. Huiviin tarvitaan 200-700 silmukkaa (tässä noin 650) ja sitten (mutta vasta sitten) alat ketjusilmukoilla yhdistämään silmukoita jotta kuvio muodostuu. Kun olet päässyt silmukkarivin toiseen pähän kierrät pään ja taas takaisin. Nyt sinulla on noin 1/6 huivista valmiina. Tee vielä 4 samanlaista kaitaletta yhdistäen ne aina sitä mukaan kun etenet ja lopulta kaiken ympärille vielä reunus. Kuten sanoin tämä ei ole vaikaa, mutta ehkä vähän tylsää, ja varsinkin jos huomaa huivin valmistutta että se on AIVAN liian pitkä sillä huivista ei voi purkaa vähän päästä kuten minkä tahansa muun huivin kanssa tekisit vaan se on purettava kokonaan sen vuoksi miten se on tehty. Shit happens, niin sanotusti. Huivi on tosi kaunis, ja juuri minun värinen, mutta koska en käyttänyt ohjeessa annettua lankaa siitä tuli liian pitkä (matto noin 200cm) jotta sitä voisi käyttää. Tekniikka oli minulle uusi enkä näin tehdessäni sitä osannut nähdä että ongelmaa oli tiedossa. Jos kiinnostuneita löytyy voin yrittää tehdä jonkunlaisen opetussarjan tästä (Novitan sivuilta tuskin pääsee katsomaan jollei ole jäsen?!) . Ole hyvä ja jätä kommentti.
